Dedication
Dedication of
Medina
Township Fallen Soldiers
Memorial July 18
The
Dedication of Medina
Township’s Fallen Soldiers
Memorial will take place at a public ceremony scheduled for 1:00 PM on July 18th, 2009. The Memorial,
part of Medina Township’s
new Blakslee Park Complex, is made possible by the hard work and
support of Medina County Hometown Heroes.
The Memorial will feature a bronze statue of a
battlefield cross. The battlefield cross is an arrangement of
boots, a rifle and a helmet that is set up as a tribute to fallen
soldiers. Leading to the statue is a walkway of brick pavers
recognizing the members of the community who have donated to help
make the Memorial a reality. A flagpole stands behind the
Memorial, from which flies an all-weather American Flag, presented
to Medina
Township by Congressman
John Boccieri. The flag is illuminated after dark, allowing it
to be flown around the clock.
The dedication ceremony will feature remarks about
Army PFC Devin Grella, a Medina
Township
resident who gave his life in service to the United States in Iraq.
There will also be music and remarks by military representatives and
dignitaries, culminating in the unveiling of the statue at the
center of the Memorial. A short reception in the Road and
Bridge Department building will follow the dedication ceremony.
Private First Class Devin J. Grella of
Medina
Township was serving with
the 706th Transportation Company when he was killed by an improvised
explosive device near
Qayarrah,
Iraq on September 6th, 2004.
The ceremony will also recognize others with local
ties who have given their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan, including
Marine Sergeant Michael Finke, of Huron, Ohio, formerly of Medina,
who was killed in a helicopter crash near Ar Rutbah, Iraq.
This memorial is dedicated to the sacrifices of
PFC Grella, and the scores of others who have given their efforts,
their strength, and often their health and their lives to the
service of the
United States of America. It
will serve as an eternal monument to their strength, courage, and
love of country. We welcome the public to join us in
dedicating this monument and remembering the sacrifices of our men
and women in the armed forces.
